In its one preseason scrimmage prior to the August 20 season opener, the San Jose State University women's soccer team and the Ajax of the Silicon Valley Soccer League played to a 2-2 tie in a three-period match.
Kelsey Lord of the Spartans with an assist from Katie Knopp scored the first goal of the match in the opening period. San Jose State's other score came on an own goal in the final period.
"We moved the ball effectively and our pace of play was good in the first half. We let them on the ball a little too much in the second half and weren't quite as organized and good," said San Jose State head coach Jeff Leightman. "Overall, we have plenty of things to work. There were some positives and some negatives, but, overall, we moved forward. It (the scrimmage) showed us where we are and where we need to go."
San Jose State, the 2009 Western Athletic Conference regular season champion, begins its 2010 season with non-conference road matches at USF on August 20, and at Santa Clara on August 22. The Spartans' home opener is Friday, August 27, against Sacramento State in a 7:00 p.m. match in Spartan Stadium.
