Colorado Spring, Colo. - The San José State women's soccer team is predicted to finish second out of 12 teams according to the 2018 Mountain West Preseason Coaches' Poll.
The annual preseason poll is made up of votes from the 12 Mountain West head coaches reflecting a predicted order of finish for the teams during regular season play.
"It's nice to be recognized by the other coaches within the conference as a top contender," said head coach Lauren Hanson, "but at the end of the day pre-season rankings don't mean anything unless you prove it, which our team looks forward to doing this season."
The Spartans, with 111 points were edged out by predicted favorite San Diego State, which received 112 points. However, San José State received five first-place votes to the Aztecs four. Boise State, predicted to finish in third place, got 99 points and two first place votes.
In fourth place is UNLV with 83 points, followed by New Mexico (80 points), Fresno State (65 points), Utah State (64 points), Wyoming (51 points), Air Force (47 points), Colorado College (42 points), Colorado State (26 points) and Nevada (12 points).
This is the third consecutive season the Spartans have been predicted to finish second in the preseason poll. Two years ago, SJSU earned the #2-seed in the Mountain West Championship Tournament and last season won the league's regular season title and entered the Tournament as the top seed.
San José State opens up Mountain West play this season with four consecutive home matches against Colorado College (Sept. 21), Air Force (Sept. 23), San Diego State (Sept. 28) and New Mexico (Sept. 30).
The regular-season home opener is set for August 17, against nationally ranked Santa Clara. Tickets will be available at the gates to the Spartan Soccer Complex. Fans can also visit the Spartan Ticket Office website or call 408-924-7589 to purchase tickets in advance.
