Irwin, Scott named women's soccer preseason All-WAC

Denver, Colo. - San Jose State University junior midfielder Nicole Irwin and sophomore forward Jessica Scott have been named to the 2006 preseason All-Western Athletic Conference women’s soccer team, as voted on by league head coaches.

This is the second year in a row that two Spartans have been selected to the preseason All-WAC team, and second straight for Irwin individually. The native of Dublin, Calif., and graduate of Dublin High School was one of four SJSU players to start all 21 games a year ago. She finished with two goals, including an overtime game-winner to beat area foe Saint Mary’s, and four assists, for eight total points. Irwin received the most votes among midfielders in gaining first-team All-WAC distinction at the conclusion of the 2005 season.

Scott, out of San Ramon, Calif., and California High School, scored five goals for 10 total points in her first collegiate season in 2005. Her 55 shots were the highest single-season total for a Spartan since 1997.

Fresno State leads the team with four players. In addition to San Jose State, Hawai’i and Nevada placed two on the team. Utah State placed one. A pair of Fresno State seniors, Cortney Sobrero and Rochelle Jagdeo, were named the 2006 preseason “Offensive Player of the Year” and “Defensive Player of the Year,” respectively.

Sobrero, a two-time first-team All-WAC honoree from Las Vegas, Nev., produced 13 points on six goals and one assist in 2005. Jagdeo, a Vacaville, Calif., native, earned her second “Preseason Defensive Player of the Year” honor. Jagdeo was a second-team All-WAC selection in 2004 and a first-team All-WAC pick and “Defensive Player of the Year” for the 2005 season.

There are 11 selections on the preseason squad. At the forward position are Scott, Sobrero, Nevada sophomore Sammy Miller and Utah State senior Charity Weston. In the midfield are Irwin, Fresno State sophomore Alison Sill and Hawai’i junior Jessica Domingo. On defense, Jagdeo joins Koren Takeyama of Hawai’i and Jessica Wilcox of Nevada. Fresno State senior Angie Larsen was named to the team as a goalkeeper.

San Jose State travels to Los Angeles, Calif., to open the 2006 regular season with a non-conference game at Loyola Marymount University on Friday, August 25, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
