Women's soccer pair selected to preseason All-WAC team

Denver, Colo. – San Jose State University sophomores Nicole Irwin and Jackie Cruz were named to the 2005 preseason All-Western Athletic Conference women’s soccer team, as voted on by league head coaches.

Irwin, a forward out of Dublin, Calif., led the SJSU offense with four goals scored in 2004. Along with one assist, her nine points tied for the team lead. Cruz, a native of Hayward, Calif., started 17 of 19 games in her rookie campaign and played the third-most minutes out of any Spartan. As a defender, Cruz was credited with one assist.

Fresno State leads the team with three players. San Jose State, Boise State, Hawai’i and Nevada all placed two on the team. Two-time WAC "Player of the Year" Natasha Kai of Hawai’i, was named the 2005 preseason "Offensive Player of the Year." Fresno State junior Rochelle Jagdeo was tabbed as the preseason "Defensive Player of the Year."

Kai earned first-team All-WAC honors in 2004 along with a second-team All-West Region selection. The Kahuku, Oahu, native led Hawai’i with 29 points on 12 goals and five assists.

Jagdeo, out of Vacaville, Calif., received the WAC’s first "Defensive Player of the Year" honor. Jagdeo was a second-team All-WAC selection in 2004.

San Jose State opens the 2005 regular season with a non-conference home contest against UC Irvine on Friday, August 26, at Spartan Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:30 PM.
