Cal State Northridge Defeats San Jose State Men's Soccer Team

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.— The San Jose State men’s soccer team lost its second game of the season at Cal State Northridge, 4-1, Friday night. The Matadors scored three goals in the second period to break a 1-1 tie at the half.

Cal State Northride’s Brian Phillips headed in the eventual game winner at 51:16 off a pass from Charles Mitchell, after Spartan goalkeeper Gilbert Vega attempted to knock down Mitchell’s pass.

The Spartans scored the first goal of the game in the eighth minute when Frank Mata redirected a corner kick form Nicky Bukowski. It took the Matadors under seven minutes to tie the game.

The loss came during the Matadors home opener, and is the first road loss for the Spartans this season.

Cal State Northridge improves to 4-1-0 overall after holding San Jose State to only nine shots with two shots on goal the entire game. The Spartans record drops to 3-2-0.

San Jose State's next game is on Sept. 23 at UC Santa Barbara. The Spartans return home to play the University of San Francisco Thursday, Sept. 27 at 7:30 p.m.
