Spartan Women’s Soccer Win First Game Of The Season In Double Overtime

SAN JOSE, Calif. – Vanessa Afonso’s goal in double overtime against visiting Seton Hall gave the San Jose State University women’s soccer a 2-1 win at Spartan Stadium on Friday.

The game was tied at 1-1 until Afonso’s unassisted goal 5:25 into the second overtime period, giving the Spartans their first win of the season.

Seton Hall took a 1-0 lead quickly as Natalie Smith scored off a Brigid Sullivan assist only 1:12 into the game. San Jose State’s Mariko Yoshihara later tied the game with an unassisted goal at 68:00, where it remained tied until Afonso’s goal.

The Spartans begin a four game road trip against Cal Poly Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Their next home game will be against University of California Santa Barbara on September 20 at 7:30 p.m.
