Women's Soccer Snaps Five Game Losing Streak in Win Over Gonzaga

The San Jose State women’s soccer team snapped a five game losing streak in a 3-1 win over Gonzaga in the Second Annual Bay Area adidas Soccer Classic Sunday at Spartan Stadium.

San Jose State’s Marie McCann scored her fifth and sixth goals of the season and had one assist in the Spartans’ victory. McCann’s first goal 1:24 into the game, rattled into the goal after Jessica Korpela and Vanessa Afonso kept the ball in front of the net.

The Spartans broke a 1-1 half time tie on Vanessa Afonso’s fourth goal of the season from a pass from Marie McCann. The goal proved to be the eventual game winner. McCann scored later on a Spartan penalty kick to give the team a 3-1 lead.

The Spartans placed third in the Bay Area adidas Classic with a loss Friday to Northeaster and Sunday’s win over Gonzaga. Earlier in the day, the University of the Pacific shut out Northeastern, 3-0, to win the tournament.

The Spartans have a 2-6-0 overall record, and will begin conference
play when they face Tulsa on Friday, October 5 at Spartan Stadium for a 7:30 p.m. match.
