SAN JOSE, Calif.—The San Jose State women’s soccer team opened Western Athletic Conference play with a 2-0 shutout over the visiting University of Tulsa Friday night at Spartan Stadium. The shutout is the first of the season and the second consecutive win for the Spartans.

San Jose State’s Marie McCann scored the first goal early in the first half after Kristina Jacob redirected a cross pass and McCann’s shot sailed over the head of the Golden Hurricane’s goalkeeper Abby Fahrig. The goal, McCann’s fifth of the year, proved to be the eventual game winner.

The Spartans held the lead through the first half with the help of their goalkeeper Eryn Meyer. Meyer saved six shots including a diving stop late in the first half to preserve the Spartans’ 1-0 lead.

San Jose State’s Kristina Jacob scored the final goal at 62:34 and Vanessa Afonso was credited with the assist. The win improves the Spartans’ record to 3-6-0 (1-0-0 in WAC games). The loss drops the Golden Hurricane’s record to 5-5-2 (0-1-0 in WAC games).

Tulsa heads to Fresno State to face the Bulldogs this Sunday. The Spartans host the Rice Owls at Spartan Stadium Sunday, Oct. 7 at 1:00 p.m. for the team’s second conference game of the year.
