Women's Soccer Finished 2004 Season with 2-1 Loss at Tulsa

Tulsa, Okla.-The San Jose State women's soccer season ended on Halloween with a 2-1 loss at Tulsa in a Western Athletic Conference match in Tulsa.

The Spartans tied the match at 1-1 in the 77th minute as Vanessa Afonso intercepted a Tulsa pass and knocked the ball into the empty net. It was one four shots Afonso took in her final Spartan match. Christina Morrison passed the ball to Afonso to get the assist on the goal.

Tulsa's Molly Fitzsimmons scored in the 80th minute for the Golden Hurricane win. She headed an Ashley Rickner corner kick over the Spartan defense for the win. Fitzsimmons also scored the first goal of the match with a one-timer in the 53rd minute.

San Jose State outshot the Golden Hurricane 17-14 and took 10 shots on goal compared to five for Tulsa. Spartan goalie Adrienne Herbst made three saves in the match.

With the loss, the Spartans finished the 2004 season under first year head coach Dave Siracusa with a 5-12-1 overall record and 2-5-1 WAC mark. San Jose State says goodbye to four seniors - Vanessa Afonso, Heather Dickinson, Shannon Leslie and Christina Morrison. This year's team more than doubled their win output from the 2003 overall and WAC seasons. The team posted three shutouts on the season, the combined number of shutouts for the Spartans the past three years combined.
