April 23 Spring Season Doubleheader

April 21, 2011

San Jose, Calif.----The Spartans gear up against the defending Coast Conference champion Foothill College and Cal State Monterey Bay in a spring season doubleheader Saturday, April 23 at Spartan Stadium.

Match one against Foothill College is slated at 2:00 p.m. and Cal State Monterey Bay will follow at 4:00 p.m.

Admission is free to the doubleheader and all spring contests.

The Spartans took down the California Storm from the Women's Premier Soccer League (WPSL), the highest level of women's amateur soccer in the United States, 4-3, in a friendly back on April 17.

Goalkeeper and soon-to-be senior Meghan Maiwald guarded the pipes through the 80th minute allowing one goal and Gladis Covarrubias, soon-to-be sophomore, took over the final 10 minutes allowing two goals.

Soon-to-be seniors, Shanelle Furner and Stephanie Bales, and soon-to-be junior Kelsey Lord each recorded goals. The fourth and final Spartan goal came through a pocket of defenders after getting blocked multiple times and eventually getting tipped in through traffic.

The Storm kicked off their 2010 WPSL season 11-1 to lead the Pacific North Division. Appearing in the Conference Finals, their playoff run fell short dropping a match to Ajax America, 3-0.

Earlier in the week on April 16, Sonoma State edged the Spartans 1-0. The lone goal came through against Covarrubias in the final minute.

Spring season will conclude on Saturday, April 30, on Spartan Field at noon against SJSU women's soccer alumni.
