Hanson Announces First Signing Class As Head Coach

San Jose, Calif. – Four all-league honorees, two Olympic Development Program participants and two international players signed National-Letters-of-Intent to compete for the San José State University women's soccer team. 

Napa, Calif., native Nikola Baila, Doerthe Hoppius from Dorsten, Germany, San Diego native Waraporn Wangmuanklang, Myia Wilkes from Calgary, Alberta, East Union High School (Manteca, Calif.) senior Isela Rivera, Katarina Karabetsos from Buffalo Grove, Ill., and Clovis, Calif., native Alexis Weigant will join the Spartans, head coach Lauren Hanson announced.

“We’re excited to have such a talented class come in,” Hanson said. “We have players from some very good, strong ECNL clubs, as well as national team players, and are looking forward to having that experience to help build in the future.”

Baila was the 2013 Monticello Empire League (MEL) Defensive Player of the Year, helping lead Vintage High School to 16 shutouts and an MEL Championship. The Crushers' team captain, she plays club soccer for Marin FC 96G Blue, based in Greenbrae, Calif.

Hoppius, a forward, plays for VFL Bochum, based in Dorsten, Germany. In 11 games started this season, she has scored seven goals. She also competes for the ABC Travel Team.  

The 2012 and 2013 Central League Player of the Year, Wangmuanklang helped lead her team to a 9-0 Central League record in 2013. A midfielder, the senior at San Diego (Calif.) High School plays club soccer for San Diego Surf ECNL U18.


 

 

Wilkes, a native of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, is a member of the Canadian National Training Program. A defender, the senior at William Aberhart High School in Calgary represented Alberta at the 2013 Canada Games in Sherbrooke, Quebec, and has been a member of the Alberta provincial team since 2008. Wilkes plays club soccer for Calgary Rangers FC 96.

A senior at East Union High School (Manteca, Calif.), Rivera scored 54 goals and dished out 38 assists her first two years of high school, earning her Valley Oak League (VOL) First Team All-League honors both years, as well as a VOL Most Valuable Player title her sophomore year. Rivera was also a Region IV Olympic Development Program (ODP) player from 2008-10 who plays plays club soccer for Mountain View Los Altos (MVLA) Soccer Club U-18 Thunder, based in Los Altos, Calif.

Karabetsos, a midfielder, is a senior at Adlai E. Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire, Ill. The native of Buffalo Grove, Ill., plays club soccer for Eclipse Select Soccer Club U-18 Elite, based in Oak Brook, Ill. In 2011, she represented the club on the Region II team at the 2011 US Youth Soccer ODP National Championship.

Weigant is a senior at Buchanan High School in Clovis, Calif. A defender, she earned First Team All-Tri-River Athletic Conference honors her junior season. Weigant plays soccer for the Central California Soccer Alliance 95G Black, based in Fresno, Calif.
