Women's soccer honors 2005 team at annual banquet

San Jose, Calif. The San Jose State University women’s soccer team handed out awards at its end-of-the-year banquet for the 2005 season on Monday, January 30. The event was held inside the Simpkins Stadium Center Gold Room on the SJSU campus.

Freshman Spartan standout Liz Behlen, out of Sunnyvale, Calif., and St. Francis High School, collected awards for both “Offensive Player of the Year” and “Freshman of the Year,” as voted on by her teammates. Behlen had already earned Western Athletic Conference “Freshman of the Year” and first-team All-WAC honors following a rookie campaign in which she led the team in both goals with eight and points scored with 20.

Sophomore defensive anchor Jackie Cruz (Hayward, Calif./Notre Dame-Belmont HS), one of just four Spartan players to start all 21 games in 2005, who also added a spectacular goal in a 4-2 home win over Utah State on October 14, garnered “Defensive Player of the Year” honors.

Kelly Madej, a redshirt freshman forward out of Santa Clara, Calif., and Archbishop Mitty High School, was chosen the recipient of the “Circuit Award,” given each year to the individual who best exemplifies the spirit of Spartan women’s soccer.

San Jose State head coach Dave Siracusa and assistant coach Douglas Hastings closed the annual awards by handing out “Coaches’ Awards” to senior goalkeeper Adrienne Herbst (San Jose, Calif./Santa Teresa HS), and sophomore midfielder Kristin Krale (San Jose, Calif./Independence HS). Herbst, a 2005 tri-captain, started 20 of 21 games in the SJSU goal and finished her collegiate career ranked 10th on the all-time WAC chart in saves. Krale started all 21 games and was second behind Behlen on the team points chart with 13.

“This is such a good group of girls,” said Siracusa, who in his second season at the helm, led the Spartans to their most overall wins since 2000 and most conference wins ever, at six and four, respectively. “It was a nice evening, which fit our team. Next year’s seniors did a great job with the organization of it, as well as with the highlight film. We put this last season to rest, and now it’s time to look forward to next season.”

The Spartans begin spring training on Thursday, February 2.
