San Jose, Calif. --- The San José State women's soccer team made history with its ninth Mountain West win with a 1-0 victory over Fresno State on Senior Day at the Spartan Soccer Complex.
Nine wins during conference play is a new school record, beating the 2015 Spartans who had eight. It's the sixth win in a row which ties the longest winning streak in program history. The Spartans had never finished a season perfect at home in league play - until now - with a 6-0 Mountain West record at the new Spartan Soccer Complex.
Lauola Amanoni broke through for the Spartans (12-5-1, 9-1-1 MW) in the 81st minute with the first goal of her collegiate career putting SJSU ahead, 1-0. Gabriela Herrera gave the Spartans a lift as a late substitution when she played a ball into Kristen Amarikwa who then found Amanoni for the goal.
The San José State defense and keeper Paige Simoneau held on the rest of the way to record the seventh shutout of the season--tying another program record.
Simoneau made six saves on the way to her 11th win of the season. A threatening attack for Fresno State (10-6-3, 5-4-2 MW) came in the 54th minute when Ele Avery shot a laser from the front-left corner of the box, but Simoneau made a diving save leading to a Spartan clear.
The shot-count went in favor of the Spartans, 8-6. All six of Fresno State's shots were on frame while SJSU put 5-of-8 on goal.
The program honored six seniors: Yaritza Arista, Yvette Cuellar, Aliyah Jones, Dorthe Hoppius, Sabrina Miller and Myia Wilkes with a ceremony before their final match at home in a Spartan uniform. It was their last match at home, but now those seniors will lead SJSU into Las Vegas for the Mountain West Tournament beginning next week.
The Mountain West regular season champion and #1-seed Spartans have a first-round bye before playing the semi-final match on Thursday, November 2, at 7:00 p.m. (PT).
