USAFA, Colo. --- So much of what Carley McBeath has done all year long in the midfield for San José State doesn’t show up in the box score at the end of the night.
But Friday night McBeath was a big part of the 3-1 victory over Air Force in Mountain West play with a game-winning goal in the 73rd minute. It was the first goal of the year for the senior.
“It was a great goal for Carley,” said San José State head coach Lauren Hanson. “We played a lot of different players tonight and it was really just a solid team effort. It shows how accomplished we are playing as a team.”
The Spartans (9-4-4, 6-2-1 MW) got on the board early as they’ve done throughout the majority of conference play. Darriell Franklin scored her second goal of the year in the 14th minute. Dorthe Hoppius laid the ball back to Franklin who slotted it in to the far post with the left foot.
“I told Darriell at halftime I thought that was her best performances out of the gate,” Hanson said.
Air Force (7-7-2, 3-5-1 MW) evened the match in the 61st minute with a goal by Hailey Laub. SJSU keeper Ana Calero blocked a shot up into the crossbar and Laub was right there for the rebound and score.
With the score knotted 1-1, Franklin sent a pass in from the right wing to McBeath in open space. After a short dribble McBeath fired at the keeper from 25 yards out. The ball skipped past the diving Jennifer Hiddink to give SJSU the 2-1 lead.
SJSU scored again in the final minute to make it 3-1 when Alyssa Bertuleit hit Hoppius with a pass in from the left corner. It was the third assist for Bertuleit in the last two matches, and the third straight match with a goal for Hoppius.
San José State, with the league’s top offense since the turn of conference play, has scored at least three goals in as many consecutive matches.
San José State will play its final home game of the 2016 season on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. (PT) against Colorado College. Nine seniors will be honored before the opening whistle prior to playing in their final home game as Spartans.
