Boise, Idaho --- A stifling San José State defense held Boise State to zero shots on goal in 110 minutes, but the Spartans had to settle for a 0-0 tie with the Broncos at Boas Soccer Field.
The Spartans (6-3-4, 3-1-1 MW) put a season-high 11 shots on goal, but none past Boise State (4-8-2, 3-1-1 MW) keeper Jenelle Flores.
“I thought this was one of our best performances against a very organized Boise State team,” said SJSU head coach Lauren Hanson. “Soccer can be a cruel game. We absolutely dominated the ball today and the players deserve the result of a win. But their keeper was just phenomenal.”
San José State outshot Boise State 14-2 in the second half and had a scoring opportunity as late as the 86th minute.
Dorthe Hoppius shot a low liner to the far post which Flores sent away. Maricruz Chapa gathered the rebound and fired from short range seconds later, but Flores was there again to make the save.
The final shot tally came to 25-6 Spartans advantage, led by Hoppius with nine.
While the Spartans dominated the possession for most of the match, Boise State also had its chances. However, seemingly every time a Bronco looked poised for a scoring chance, Myia Wilkes or Kristen Amarikwa would be there for the stop.
“Myia was 1-on-1 with their top scorer and she handled that challenge really well,” Hanson said. "Myia was on fire today and Kristen and Hayden completed our backline which was just fantastic.”
It is the Spartans’ sixth match of the year to reach double-overtime where the team is 1-1-4.
Ana Calero earns credit for the second shutout of her freshman campaign. The other came on the same pitch which served as a neutral site when SJSU defeated Seattle U 1-0 on August 28. Calero moves to 1-1-1 in Mountain West play.
San José State stays on the road to face Utah State on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. (MT). The match will be streamed live on the Mountain West Network.
