San Jose, Calif. --- The San José State women's soccer team was unable to finish off Saint Mary's College in regulation, and the two teams remained gridlocked during two overtime periods leading to a 1-1 draw Friday at Spartan Soccer Field.

Freshman forward Darriell Franklin netted her third goal of the season on a penalty kick in the 58th minute to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead. A hand-ball in the box led to Franklin's penalty try, and the Gaels' Valerie LaForge was sent off with a red card on the play.

The Spartans (2-1-2) had the Gaels (5-0-2) right where they wanted them -- Down 1-0, and down to 10 players on the field.

However, that didn't stop Saint Mary's from going on the attack, and Madison Salom blasted an equalizer over the fingertips of Spartan keeper Zoe Makrigiannis in the 72nd minute.

"Honestly, we played beautiful soccer," said Spartans' head coach Lauren Hanson. "Everything we asked them to do in practice, they implemented into the match today. But, something we lacked was that killer instinct. We just didn't have that bite to us today."

San José State took a season-high 21 shots while Saint Mary's matched a season-low with five. The Spartans dominated the shot column in overtime, 10-0.

Franklin and Darlene Rodriguez each had a season-high five shots, and Rodriguez's 102nd-minute header inside the box looked to be the golden goal for SJSU, until Gaels' keeper Julia McDonald snatched the ball just in time for her fourth save.

"When we were in a rush to score there in the end, that's when we saw the killer instinct come out," Hanson said. "Afterward, we talked about how that has to come out in us early on."

Rodriguez finished with three shots on goal, and Alexis Venegas added one of her own to give SJSU five for the match.

San José State plays again on Sunday at Cal Poly. The match is scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m. Live video streaming and statistics links for Sunday's match are available on the women's soccer schedule page.
