Sept. 8, 2017

Final Stats

San Jose, Calif. --- Gabriella Hurtado scored the first goal of her Spartan career and keeper Paige Simoneau earned a shutout in San José State's 1-0 win over Cal Poly at the Spartan Soccer Complex on Friday afternoon.

In the 50th minute Yaritza Arista sent a free kick inside the box from the left wing and from within a scrum of players in front of the net Hurtado tipped the ball with the right foot inside the right post. It was the first goal for the freshman from La Mirada, Calif., and it was San José State's first goal at the new Spartans Soccer Complex.

The Spartans (2-4-0) have been victims of early goals by their opponents in 2017 - allowing tallies within the first 15 minutes of three matches - but allowed just seven total shots and only one on goal in route to the shutout.

Meanwhile the offense came out aggressive in the opening period taking eight shots. The Spartans outshot the Mustangs 11-7 for the match.

Paige Simoneau saved the only Cal Poly (2-4-1) shot on goal on the way to a clean sheet and her first win of 2017. Mustangs keeper Sophia Brown made one save and took the loss.

San José State played the final 19 minutes with 10 players after Darriell Franklin was sent off after receiving two yellow cards in a span of less than one minute.

While Cal Poly managed one last-second attempt from 10 yards out, the shot was blocked and the final horn sounded.

San José State takes on Saint Mary's in its next match happening on September 15, at 2:00 p.m. (PT) at the Spartan Soccer Complex.
