Boise, Idaho --- Dorthe Hoppius scored her first goal of the season early on, and the San José State women's soccer team protected the lead the rest of the way for a 1-0 win over Seattle U on Sunday morning.
In the 19th minute, Hoppius lined up the shot from 25 yards out near the top-right corner and fired it past the keeper high to the far post. Maricruz Chapa put Hoppius in position and was credited with an assist.

"Didi was definitely the player of the game," said Spartans' head coach Lauren Hanson. "She played phenomenally and scored a fantastic goal for us."
San José State (2-1-1) remained aggressive throughout the remainder of the match, outshooting Seattle U (2-1-0) 14-4. In her Spartan debut, keeper Ana Calero earned a shutout, and didn't face one shot on goal.
The Spartan defense didn't allow a single shot in the second half on the way to the third shutout of the young season.
"I'm really proud of another shutout," Hanson said. "We always talk about organizing early and often. Our seniors and Claire Berkley really stepped up and anchored that backline today."
The victory Sunday was a bounce-back win for the Spartans, who were beaten in the 110th minute of overtime on Friday by UC Irvine.
"I love that we came out with a gritty, hard mentality on a Sunday after a tough loss," Hanson said. "Seattle U is a fantastic team. To get a win against a quality opponent like that speaks volumes to where our team is this year."
San José State's next match is Sunday, September 4, on the road at Cal State Fullerton. The match is set to begin at 2:00 p.m.
