San Jose, Calif. --- The San José State women's soccer team allowed a goal in only the third minute of play and that would be the decisive tally in the 1-0 loss to UC Santa Barbara in the 2017 home opener at the Spartan Soccer Complex.
UCSB (2-0-0) sent a right-side corner kick in front of the net into a scrum where multiple players on both teams got a touch, and it was Amanda Ball's shot which slotted into the back of the net for the match's only score.
"We just came out flat in the first half and you can't do that," said San José State head coach Lauren Hanson. "You can't come out flat on a Sunday. You have to come out ready to play, which we did in the second half."
San José State (0-2-0) was the more aggressive team in the second period, outshooting the Gauchos 8-3. However only three of 11 shots total for the Spartans were on net. Five of UCSB's nine shots were on target.
"The positive part about non-conference play against a good team is you get to figure out what works and what doesn't," Hanson said. "This is a journey and we're trying to figure out what works before heading into conference. I think we figured out a lot of those pieces today."
San José State takes on Eastern Washington in its next match on Friday, August 25.
