Davis, Calif. --- Courtney Elterman's goal in the 84th minute gave the San José State women's soccer team a 2-1 victory over UC Davis in an exhibition match at Aggie Soccer Field.

"This was a great match to get under our belt," said Spartans' head coach Lauren Hanson. "I thought everyone who stepped on the field played really well, whether it was a returning player or someone playing in their first match."

Elterman's goal on a header to the far post was assisted by Claire Berkley, and broke a 1-1 tie late in the match.

Yaritza Arista gave the Spartans a 1-0 lead in the 51st minute, but UC Davis' Rachel Ahr netted the equalizer later in the 73rd minute.

San José State was the aggressor in the match, outshooting the Aggies 12-5 and had five corner kicks to UC Davis' one.

"It was good for us to get some kinks out and see some things we still need to work on before our first regular season match next week," Hanson said.

With the only tuneup in the rearview mirror, San José State hosts UC Riverside in the regular season opener on Friday, August 19, at 4:00 p.m. (PT). The match will take place at the football practice facility located on Stadium Way.
