Gym Talk - December 9, 2006

Hello and welcome to the fifth edition of Gym Talk. My name is Leah Bigelow, and this is my third year on the gymnastics team. As an upperclassman, it is great to know what to expect, and what will be expected of me, during the upcoming season. This knowledge is becoming more and more important as January nears since I can help keep the entire team focused on having another great season.

In the gym, we have been practicing full routines and figuring out who is ready to compete on each event. Many new skills have been learned and old ones have been perfected, so now is the time to put it all together. We have also done a few “show days,” where the top six girls on each event at that time perform full routines in a meet-like setting. Although nerve-wracking at first, this is a great opportunity to become comfortable under pressure so that we are as ready as we can be when it is really time to compete.

Speaking of competing, our annual Blue/Gold intrasquad meet will take place on Sunday, December 10th. The top girls on each event will show their routines, as well as any alternates who have the potential to make line-ups during the season. We are all looking forward to this opportunity to show off what we’ve been working so hard on this past semester and to getting our fans excited for the season.

Last Thursday, some of the girls on our team participated in the First Annual Spartan Idol. It was hard for us to think of something to do because usually gymnastics is our coolest talent, but for this show we wanted to do something different. My teammates decided to do a skit from Saturday Night Live that is made up of cheers and a comedic dance routine. The crowd seemed to really enjoy our performance, but unfortunately we were robbed of winning the title.

Even though this is my third year of school, this time in the semester still feels a little overwhelming. With finals coming up as well as competition season, it is important to stay focused and on track. As gymnasts, most of us have been dealing with this for our entire lives, but still, that short break for Thanksgiving is always a much-needed break. Also, it was a great opportunity to visit home and spend time with family. Taking a little vacation sure helps me come back relaxed and refreshed, exactly what I need to survive these next few crazy weeks.
