Level 10 Gymnast from South Coast Gymnastics signs for 2008

San Jose—Katie Merritt, a Level 10 gymnast from South Coast Gymnastics in Irvine, Calif., has signed a national letter of intent to compete for the San Jose State women’s gymnastics team beginning with the 2008 season as announced by Spartan head coach Wayne Wright.

Merritt trains at South Coast Gymnastics Center under Chinese Olympic team members Xiaoping Li and Jia Wen. Merritt finished seventh in the all-around at the Southern California State Championships and 24th at the 2006 USA Gymnastics Junior Olympic Regional Championships.

“We are very excited to have Katie join our team and have her as part of our gymnastics family,” said Wright. “She has been on the top of our list since the beginning. Katie is a great student-athlete and a powerful but graceful gymnast who will bring an array of exciting skills to the gym.”

San Jose State begins competition in January and is coming off a season where the team finished fourth at the NCAA West Regional. The fourth-place finish is the highest for any Spartan team at the regional
