San Jose, Calif.— San José State women’s gymnast Taylor Chan was honored this past Saturday night in British Columbia where she received the Sandra Hartley National Stream Athlete of the Year Award from Gymnastics BC.
Chan, from Coquitlam, British Columbia, was one of over 100 individuals who were honored for their gymnastics excellence over the past season.
The award Chan received is presented to the highest ranked National Novice or Open gymnast who trains in and competes for BC. It was donated by Sandra Hartley, five-time BC Senior Women’s Champion between 1965 and 1970. She also represented Canada at the 1968 Olympic Games, won the 1968 Canadian Senior Women’s Championships and won silver at the 1967 Pan American Games.
During her club time, she trained and competed for TAG Gymnastics. Chan qualified for the Canadian National Championships for the past seven years (2010-16). She finished first on the floor, third on the bars and fourth in the all-around at the 2016 Canadian JO Level 10 Championships.
Chan and the Spartan women’s gymnastics team begins the 2017 season at the NorCal Classic on Monday, January 9, in Berkeley, Calif., beginning at 7 p.m.
