Gym Talk: Greta Leach

Hello everyone and welcome to the second edition of Gym Talk for the 2007-2008 year. I am Greta Leach, a senior on the Spartan gymnastics team. This will be my fifth and final year with the Spartans. I can't believe I'm almost done! Everyone always tells you that your college years go by so fast, so enjoy them. But you don't really believe it until it happens to you. I am definitely going to miss everything about being on this team (yes, probably even the 7 a.m. conditioning, although I can't believe I'm saying that right now!)

Things are going great in and out of the gym as we enter the month of November. In the gym we have been working on putting together routines, and soon we will be practicing full routines on each event. The team is looking strong, and the freshmen seem to be adjusting well to our shorter practices where we emphasize quality over quantity, which can be a huge change from the long hours club gymnasts spend training. In addition to gymnastics, we have been conditioning in the gym Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings as well as weight training on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons to assure that we are in the best shape possible to start out the season healthy.

Outside the gym, of course there is school which will be wrapping up for me in the spring when I will be graduating with a degree in Business Management. I am very excited but also nervous to get out there in the real world. We just had our annual scholar athlete awards where many of the gymnasts were recognized and the team came in second place behind women's cross country for the top team GPA. It was very close, and we plan to have the title back next year! The freshmen seem to be adjusting well to college classes and attend study hall where they can get help from tutors in many subjects.

A few weeks ago, some of us attended a walk-a-thon at Sakamoto Elementary School in San Jose. It was a really fun opportunity for us to get out and talk to the kids about college, the importance of exercising and, of course, gymnastics!

As you all know, Halloween just passed, and, as is tradition, every year we all came dressed up in costumes. Every class had a theme. The freshman were the Spice Girls the sophomores were dressed up as the senior class, the juniors were all different colored skittles, the seniors were the four seasons, and the class that has adopted the name "the others" (5th year Raylyn Cardeno, senior transfer Emily Stebbins and myself) were dressed up as angels and devils.

And finally as you might know, we just recently had a 5.6 earthquake here in San Jose and you can bet that it shook SJSU pretty good! I was at the Spartan volleyball game in Spartan Gym (where gymnastics meets are also held) as were some of my teammates and Coach Wayne. We all panicked a bit but everything and everyone turned out ok. Many of our out-of-state team members got a scare with their first earthquake, and for the rest of us it was a good wake-up call to always be prepared and have a plan.

Well that's all for now. Thanks and stay tuned for the next edition of Gym Talk! GO SPARTANS!!
