Howard Receives Another Academic Honor

San Jose-Academic honors to continue to pile up for San Jose State women's gymnast Shanice Howard as she received another one on Thursday.  Howard was named to the second team Capital One Academic All-District 8 Women's At-Large Team as selected by the district's College Sports Information Directors.

Howard, who has received all "A"s and one "A-" in her collegiate academic career, has a 3.99 grade point average as a kinesiology major.  In late April, Howard was named the 2011 Arthur Ashe Jr., Sports Scholar Overall Top Female Student-Athlete for her work in the classroom and in the gym.  The same week she received the previous honor, Howard was also recognized as a President's Scholar at the 49th Annual Honors Convocation.

Howard was one of 20 athletes from the University Division of District 8 to receive first or second team honors.  Over 80 student-athletes were nominated from the district that includes California, Oregon, Washington, Hawaii, Alaska, Idaho, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, British Columbia and Yukon.

In the gym, Howard was a second team All-Western Athletic Conference honoree on vault this season.  During her four-year career, she was a first team honoree on floor and a second team honoree on vault (twice) and floor.

To be selected to the Capital One teams, a student-athlete must maintain a 3.30 or better grade point average, compete in at least 50 percent of their team's competitions and reached sophomore athletic eligibility.
