VALLEAU TO COMPETE ON FLOOR AT NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS:  For the first time in school history, a San Jose State gymnast will compete at the National Collegiate Women’s Gymnastics Championships as an individual specialist.  Katie Valleau will represent San Jose State on the floor after tying for first at the Corvallis Regional with a career-best 9.900.

Valleau will compete in the second session on Friday beginning at 6 p.m. Eastern.  She will rotate throughout the meet with Florida and fellow WAC all-arounder Amy Glass from Boise State.  Valleau will perform her routine during the third rotation of the session.

The top four individuals from each event (plus ties) from each session from the preliminary team and all-around competition will compete in the individual event finals on Sunday, April 17 at 1 p.m. Eastern.

CBS will air the championships on a tape-delay basis on Saturday, May 14, 12-2 p.m. PDT.  Tim Brando and Amanda Borden call all the action.

KATIE’S KORNER:  Katie Valleau will be blogging throughout the week, telling her thoughts and letting Spartan fans have a glimpse into the national championships.  Her blog will be posted daily, as available, on www.sjsuspartans.com.

LIVE SCORING:  The NCAA Championships will have live scoring available through NCAA.com.  A link will also be provided on www.sjsuspartans.com

LIVE STREAMING:  Each session of competition will be streamed live online at NCAA.com.  Links to both the streaming and scoring will also be posted on www.sjsuspartans.com

PRACTICE SCHEDULE:  Katie will practice on Thursday from 1:50 p.m. to 2:50 p.m. at the Wolstein Center.  All practices are open to the public.

HEAD COACH:  San Jose State head coach Wayne Wright is in his 10th season at the helm of the Spartan women’s gymnastics team. Valleau is his third athlete he has coached at the national championships after coaching all-arounders Veronica Porte and Thomasina Wallace at the 2009 NCAA Championships.

FIRST REGIONAL FLOOR CHAMPION:  With her career-best 9.900 at the Corvallis Regional, Katie Valleau is the first San Jose State women’s gymnast to win a regional title on floor.  Only one other Spartan has won a regional title - Thomasina Wallace with a 9.950 on bars at the 2009 NCAA West Regional.

SPARTANS AT CORVALLIS REGIONAL:  San Jose State finished fourth at the Corvallis Regional with a 194.425, just .100 behind Michigan State.

SPARTANS AT THE WAC CHAMPIONSHIPS: San Jose State finished third at the 2011 Western Athletic Conference Championships with a 193.925, as the Spartans hosted the meet at The Event Center.

NATIONAL RANKINGS:  Valleau enters the championships tied for 63rd on the floor with her 9.845 regional qualifying score.

ALL-WAC HONORS:  Katie Valleau received first team All-Western Athletic Conference honors after tying for second on the floor with a 9.825.  It is her first all-conference honor of her career.

WALK-ON TO FULL-RIDE:  Katie Valleau came to San Jose State as a walk-on to the Spartan team.  She spent two years as a walk-on, performing on the floor her freshman year and the vault and floor her sophomore year before receiving a full-ride scholarship for her junior year.

YMCA GYMNAST:  Unlike many gymnasts this weekend, Katie Valleau trained at the Mission Valley YMCA.  The Spartans actually have two YMCA gymnasts as Julia Greer, from the same gym, was named the 2011 WAC Freshman of the Year.

VALLEAU JOINS TOP SCORES:  With her 9.900, Katie Valleau is now one of 11 gymnasts who have scored a 9.900 or higher on the floor.  There has been only one 10.0 score on the floor in Spartan history by Jennifer Greene at the 2004 MPSF Championships.
