Howard Signs With Women's Gymnastics

San Jose—Shanice Howard, a club teammate of fall signee Katie Merritt, has signed a national letter of intent to compete for the San Jose State women’s gymnastics team beginning with the 2008 season, as announced by Spartan head coach Wayne Wright.

Howard, a Level 10 gymnast, trains alongside Merritt at South Coast Gymnastics under Chinese Olympic team members Xiaoping Li and Jia Wen. This spring, Howard finished second in the all-around and on the vault at the 2007 Lady Luck Invitational in Las Vegas. She placed third in the all-around and captured the vault title at Chris Waller’s Heart of a Champion Invitational 2007. Howard also placed in the all-around at the 2007 Golden State Friendship Challenge.

“Shanice is a powerful gymnast and will add depth to the 2008 Spartan team,” said Wayne Wright. “She is an amazing vaulter and beautiful bar worker. Outside the gym, Shanice is a very smart student with a straight-A average at Tesoro High School.”
