Women's gymnastics holds off Sacramento State, 193.550-193.350

San Jose, Calif.-----With one of its best team scores in the uneven bars this season, San Jose State University defeated Sacramento State University, 193.550-193.350, in a Western Athletic Conference women’s gymnastics meet held in Spartan Gym.

As a team, the Spartans (12-9, 4-2 WAC) won only one of four events, the uneven bars, with a 48.675 compared to the Hornets’ 47.475. The 1.20 margin was enough to offset Sacramento State finishing first as a team in the vault, balance beam and floor exercise.

COMING BACK STRONG

“Bars is what did it for us. All year vault’ had been our strongest event, but we had some troubles on vault. We had to count a fall. Everybody stayed with it. We came back strong on bars. Beam and floor went really well for us,” said San Jose State coach Wayne Wright. “I was proud of the team for staying with it, especially when you have two falls on an apparatus.

“It’s always a close meet with Sacramento State. Both teams are excellent teams. Both teams will do really well. We had a great crowd tonight. It was awesome.”

San Jose State’s Kelsey Spellacy, a senior, was one of three Spartans who finished in a first-place tie in an event on “Senior Night.” Spellacy tied teammate Veronica Porte for top honors in the uneven bars with a 9.800. Renae Moneymaker was the other Spartan to tie for first in an event with her 9.800 score in the vault.

SENDING THE SENIORS OUT ON A HIGH NOTE

“We wanted to give our seniors a good meet at their last home meet especially against Sacramento State, a huge rival of ours,” said Minotti, who had a pair of second-place scores in he vault and the uneven bars. “We were motivated to come out on top for the seniors.”

Sacramento State’s Marina Borisova finished first in the all-around with a 39.050. Porte of San Jose State was second in the all-around with a season-high score of 38.800.

Borisova was the only gymnast with two first-place scores. She won the floor exercise with a 9.875 and tied teammate Melissa Genovese in the balance beam with a 9.800.

San Jose State concludes regular-season action, Friday, March 17, at the University of California.
