Seniors to be honored March 10 against Sacramento State

The San Jose State women’s gymnastics team will host Sacramento State on Friday, March 10, at Spartan Gym. The meet will begin at 7 p.m. The five Spartan seniors will be honored prior to the meet. San Jose State enters the week with an 11-9 overall record and 3-2 Western Athletic Conference record.

ABOUT SACRAMENTO STATE: The Hornets are 8-9 overall and 4-1 in the WAC. The school joined the conference this season as an affiliate member for women’s gymnastics. The team last competed at Boise State on Friday, March 3, where they scored a 193.200 including a season-high 48.975 on the floor.

SENIORS TO BE HONORED: The five San Jose State seniors will be honored prior to Friday night’s meet. Competing for the final time at Spartan Gym will be Tracie Kavalec, Amberly Klein, Adriane Mertens, Kelsey Spellacy and Alley Zezoney. Kavalec is a bars specialist for the Spartans. Klein is a two-time MSPF Beam Champion and also competes on the floor. Mertens has competed on the beam in every meet this year. Spellacy is another bars specialist for San Jose State, while Zezoney is a vault specialist.

HEAD COACH: San Jose State head coach Wayne Wright is in his fifth season at the helm of the program. He helped the Spartan program make significant strides during his four-year tenure, breaking school records, winning conference championships and a team invitation to the NCAA West Regional.

REGIONAL RANKINGS: San Jose State is currently fourth in the West Region as of March 6. The Spartans are tied for 30th nationally and have been as high as 28th in the country.

The 193.080 RQS places the Spartans fourth in the West Region. The top-18 teams in the country based on RQS will be seeded and paired in to the six regions (three per region). The remaining three teams will be filled from within the region. San Jose State has only participated at the West Regional one time in school history (2003).
