Women's Gymnastics - 2nd-Highest Score of Year In Win At So. Utah

St. George, UtahThe San Jose State women’s gymnastics team continued to record top team scores and win events in one of the best seasons in school history.  Friday night, the Spartans received its fifth-highest team score ever and second-highest this year with a 195.250 in a win at Southern Utah who scored a 194.600.

Individually, two Spartans won events on the night.  For the second consecutive week, Thomasina Wallace won the all-around with a career-high score.  On this night, Wallace scored a 39.375 to tie Dani Albright for the second-highest all-around score in school history.  Wallace also tied for first on vault with a 9.850, won the bars with a 9.875 and finished second on the floor with a 9.825.

Veronica Porte won the floor with a 9.875 and finished second in the all-around with a 39.050.  

San Jose State started the meet on bars with a 48.775.  After Wallace’s 9.875, Alise Blackwell scored a 9.775 followed by Jessica Khoshnood with a 9.750.  Porte had a 9.700, Tiffany Louie a 9.675 and Renae Moneymaker a 9.600.  The Spartans had a .050 lead over Southern Utah who recorded a 48.725 on vault.

The Spartans then rotated to vault and tied for the fourth-highest score in school history and second-highest this season with a 48.925.  Wallace led the team with a 9.850, followed by Lily Swann and Blackwell each at 9.825 and Porte at 9.800.  Shanice Howard received a 9.625, while Katie Merritt scored a 9.600.  The team extended its lead in the meet, 97.700-96.750.

The floor team then scored a 48.775, led by Porte’s 9.875.  Wallace added a 9.825, while Gabrielle Targosz received a 9.725.  Khoshnood followed with a 9.700, then Katie Valleau at 9.650 and Howard at 9.600.  In the third rotation, Southern Utah scored its highest team score with a 49.100, but San Jose State continued to lead the meet, 146.575-145.850.

In the final rotation, the beam team continued the most popular team score for the Spartans with a 48.775.  Wallace led the team with a 9.825, while Aubrey Lee and Merritt each received 9.775, a career-best for Merrtit.   Swann, in her first meet on beam, scored a 9.725.  Porte scored a 9.675, while Blackwell added a 9.650.

The Spartans return home this Sunday, March 8, for a meet against Utah State at 2 p.m. in Spartan Gym, located on the corner of Fourth and San Carlos Streets.  Three Spartan seniors, Alise Blackwell, Renae Moneymaker and Veronica Porte, will be honored prior to the meet.
