Gym Talk - February 28, 2006

Hi everyone my name is Veronica Porte and I am a freshman on the Spartan gymnastics team. We just finished up a doubleheader weekend. We completed our home meet on Friday defeating UC Davis and placed second out of four teams in Nebraska on Sunday.

Although it was a busy weekend, it was a good experience. Coming from club gymnastics to collegiate has been a rewarding experience. At the collegiate level the season is just as long, however there are twice as many meets and we are competing every weekend. The mentality is also different. I am no longer competing for myself, but for the team. I am fortunate enough to be a part of such a close team where it’s always a team effort and we can count on each other inside and outside of the gym.

This year as been a whole new experience being away from my parents and living in the dorms. Not having someone tell me what to so all the time has helped me learn to make my own decisions and gain independence.

It wasn’t as hard to adjust to the academics as I thought it would be. Maybe it was the six hours of study hall a week or the encouragement to reach our team goal of a 3.0 GPA or higher, but either way, the freshman class all achieved a 3.0 or better. This semester is a little tougher with the season going on and all the traveling, but who’s not up for a challenge?

Until next time my friends, stay beautiful and thanks for supporting Spartan gymnastics.
