Women's Gymnasts Win Vault, Beam, All-Around at Sacramento State

Sacramento, Calif.Shina Cardeno won the vault, Leah Bigelow won the beam and Michelle Minotti won the all-around, but the San Jose State women’s gymnastics team fell just.300 short of a win. The Spartans scored a season-high 193.625 compared to Sacramento State’s 193.925.

For the second consecutive week, Cardeno won the vault for the Spartans.  She scored a career best 9.825 in the win.  Michelle Minotti tied for third with a 9.775.  As a team, the Spartans scored a 48.625 on the vault, the second highest team score this season.  One interesting note to the start of the meet came as both the Spartans and Hornets started on the vault together in rotation one and on the bars in rotation two due to the lateness of two judges stuck in traffic.

The next rotation had both teams competing on bars.  Unfortunately, San Jose State had to count a fall and scored just a 47.525.  Veronica Porte was the team’s best performer for a 9.800, tying her season best.  Alise Blackwell and Minotti each scored a 9.650.

San Jose State then rotated to floor and scored a season-best 48.850.  Porte again led the team with a 9.850, a season best.  Blackwell scored a season best 9.825, and Amberly Klein and Minotti each scored a 9.750.

SPARTANS, HORNETS TIED HEADED INTO FINAL ROTATION

Heading into the final rotation, both teams were tied at 145.000.  Bigelow won the beam for the Spartans for the second consecutive week with a career best 9.825.  Klein scored a 9.725, while Adriane Mertens and Minotti each scored a 9.700.  The Spartans scored a 48.625 on the beam, but Sacramento State scored a 48.925 on the floor to win the meet.

“It took a lot of hard work for months and faith I could hit beam routine,” said Bigelow.  “I felt good tonight, and that I could hit my beam routine.”

In the all-around, Minotti scored a 38.875 to win. She scored a 9.775 on the vault for a third place finish.  Porte was second with a 38.675, while Renae Moneymaker scored a 38.000.

“I just keep doing what I do in practice and hit my routines (to win the all-around),” said Minotti.  “I want to be successful and help do whatever it takes to help my team do its best.”

SPARTAN BESTS PLEASES COACH

The Spartans’ team score a 193.625 is a season best for the team.  It ranks among the top-35 team scores in school history.  Also, Cardeno’s 9.825 on the vault ties for eighth place among the Spartans’ top vault scores along with teammates Raylyn Cardeno and Minotti.

“This was a great meet,” said San Jose State head coach Wayne Wright.  “Both teams were very competitive.  It came down to which team would not have to count falls, which we did on bars.

“I am very proud of this team.  They keep fighting and stay with it to get better. The beam team did not let us down, and we keep getting better each meet.”

San Jose State returns home next Friday, February 24, to face UC Davis for a non-conference meet at 7 p.m., in Spartan Gym.
