Women's Gymnastics Seniors To Be Honored Friday Night

Friday Night Lights takes on a new meaning tomorrow night as the Spartan women's gymnastics team hosts Boise State, UC Davis and Seattle Pacific under the bright lights of Spartan Gym.  Doors open at 5:45 p.m. with introductions beginning promptly at 7 p.m.  After the meet, the three Spartan seniors will be honored after their final performances inside Spartan Gym.

 

Live scoring from the meet will be available on the front page of www.sjsuspartans.com.  The page will go live on the Spartan web site at approximately 6:45 p.m., and will be updated every few minutes.  Fans will need to refresh their page periodically for the most up-to-date results.

 

San Jose State is coming off its second-highest score of the season, a 193.825, at #2 Stanford last Saturday. The Spartans scored a 49.000 on floor, and Lily Swann led team in the all-around with a 38.800.  Thomasina Wallace tied for second on the bars with a 9.850, while Wallace and Katie Valleau each received a 9.875 on floor.

 

Boise State, the preseason selection to win the Western Athletic Conference title, ranks 12th in the country with a 195.038 team average.  The team scored a season-high 196.175 last Friday night against Cal State Fullerton.  Amy Glass is the WAC's top all-arounder as she scored a 39.400 last week and also won the all-around titles in meets at Alabama and Arizona.  Hannah Redmond has the conference's best score on bars this year with a 9.900.

 

UC Davis enters Friday night's meet with a 6-1 record after defeating Air Force last weekend with a 192.100 team score.  The Aggies are currently ranked 39th with a 192.065 average.  San Jose State and the Aggies meet for the third time this season.  UC Davis won the first meeting of the season on Jan. 9 with a 191.300 team score, while the Spartans won a meet at California with UC Davis the next weekend.

 

Seattle Pacific hopes to continue its streak of scoring in the 190.000+ range in this meet.  Last week, the Falcons scored a 190.100 in a meet against Washington and posted season highs on the vault and floor. This will also be the second time in three weeks that SPU has competed against UC Davis.  The teams competed in a dual meet in Seattle on January 28, and the Falcons received its highest score of the year with a 191.150.

 

The Spartans rank in may categories nationally.  Below is a list of where San Jose State ranks as of February 6.

Team - 34th, 193.100

Vault - 32nd, 48.505

Bars - 34th, 48.350

Beam - 41st, 47.520

Floor - 18th, 48.725

Katie Valleau - 16th on floor, 9.850

 

After the meet, three Spartan seniors will be honored for their four-year careers at San Jose State.  Shanice Howard, Katie Merritt and Lily Swann have been contributors each of their four seasons.  Howard has been an All-WAC honoree on floor and vault during her career.  She is also successful in the classroom with the second-highest grade-point average among all Spartan student-athletes.  Merritt has concentrated on vault, bars and beam the past three years and is one of the team's top contributors on each event.  Swann has been an all-arounder the past two seasons.  Last season, she finished third in the all-around at the WAC Championships and represented San Jose State at the NCAA West Regional in the all-around.

 

All three student-athletes are multiple-year San Jose State Scholar-Athletes and Academic All-WAC honorees.

 

Individual meet ticket prices are $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for youth 12-and-under. Youth in their Club Gymnastics shirts or sweats will be $1.00. Seating is General Admission at Spartan Gym. All doors to the facility open 1 hour and 15 minutes prior to every home meet.

Spartan Gym is located in Yosh Uchida Hall, on the corner of Fourth and San Carlos Streets on the San Jose State campus. Fans can park on campus in the Fourth Street Garage. A parking permit can be purchased in the garage for $5.00.

 

In March, the Spartans have the privilege of hosting the 2011 Western Athletic Conference Women's Gymnastics Championships on Saturday, March 19, inside The Event Center.  Be sure to mark your calendar for the WAC Championship and come cheer your Spartans as they go for a conference title!
