Women's Gymnastics Sets Vault School Record in Wins; Minotti Wins All-Around

San JoseThe San Jose State women’s gymnastics team started Friday night’s tri-meet at Spartan Gym on a strong note as the Spartans scored a school record 48.875 on the vault to open the meet. San Jose State finished the meet with a 192.950 and defeated Seattle Pacific who scored a 190.225 and Illinois-Chicago who posted a 189.675. Spartan Michelle Minotti won the all-around with a season-best 39.050.

San Jose State’s vault score bested the school record of 48.725 set against California on March 21, 2003. Four Spartans recorded career bests on the vault Minotti with a 9.825, Shina Cardeno and Renae Moneymaker each with a 9.775 and Veronica Porte with a 9.750.

“Vault is our best event this year,” said San Jose State head coach Wayne Wright. “I was very pleased with how we started the meet on vault. Vault is our strength and tonight we proved it with our score. We hit all of six of our vaults as no one scored below a 9.600. It is a hard event for anyone, and this helped set the tone for the rest of the meet.”

Minotti won the all-around with a season-best 39.050. The reigning WAC Gymnast of the Week tied for first on the beam with a season best 9.775 and was second on the vault with a career best 9.825. She added a 9.800 on floor and a 9.700 on bars.

“I had a feeling during warm-ups that I was going to have a pretty good meet,” said Minotti. “I have been working hard at practice and now am finally putting it all together.”

Other top Spartan performers included Porte who was third in the all-around with a season best 38.675. She was first on the bars with a season-best 9.800 and a 9.700 on the floor. Moneymaker was fifth in the all-around with a 38.150. Leah Bigelow tied for first on the beam with a 9.725.

San Jose State’s next meet will be at Seattle Pacific next Friday, February 10, at 7 p.m.
