Women's Gymnastics Total Team Effort In Second-Highest Score In School History

Seattle, Wash.On a night when the Spartans swept every event, the San Jose State women’s gymnastics team recorded its second-highest team score in school history with a 195.400 to defeat host Seattle Pacific who had a 188.025.

The 195.400 team score is the second-highest in school history, behind just a 195.925 the Spartans scored to win the 2004 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation title.  Tonight’s team score is also the highest since last season when the team scored a 195.325 against Southern Utah on February 16, 2008.

In a true team-effort victory, four different Spartans won individual titles. Lily Swann won the vault with a 9.825.  Thomasina Wallace won the bars with a 9.875 and the all-around with a season-high 39.200.  Alise Blackwell scored a career-best 9.850 on beam for the win, while Veronica Porte received a 9.825 on floor for the victory.

“This was an awesome meet for our team, and I am really proud of them,” said San Jose State head coach Wayne Wright.  “Tonight was a total team effort.  We finally put a meet together in all four rotations.”

The Spartans started on bars where the team scored a 48.700, the 12th highest score in school history. After Wallace’s 9.875, Jessica Khoshnood tied her career-best with a 9.800.  Porte also scored a season-best 9.775, while Blackwell had a 9.700.  Renae Moneymaker scored a 9.550, followed by Katie Merritt with a 9.300.

On vault in the second rotation, the Spartans posted the seventh-highest score in Spartan history with a 48.825.  Swann led the team with a 9.825, while Wallace received a 9.800.  Shanice Howard scored a season-high 9.750.  Blackwell and Merritt each scored a 9.725, while Porte had a 9.700.

After two rotations, San Jose State had a commanding 97.525-94.725 lead over the Falcons.  But the team had to compete on the beam and floor, two apparatus that caused problems for the team last week.

On floor, changes were made, routines tweaked and the hard work paid off with a 49.000, the 11th highest floor score in school history.  Khoshnood was added to the floor team for the first time in two seasons.  She led off the six Spartans competing and scored a 9.775, along with Wallace.  Gabby Targosz, Katie Valleau and Howard each scored a 9.800.  Porte performed last and scored the team’s high score of 9.825.

“We made some changes to our rotation and worked on our problems in practice this week,” said Wright.  “The ladies made the changes that we practiced and did very well tonight.”

In the last rotation, the team recorded its best score of the season and the sixth in school history with a 48.875 on beam.  Blackwell led the team with a 9.850.  Aubrey Lee scored a season-high 9.800, to go with Porte’s 9.800.  Wallace led off the team with a 9.750, followed by Kelli Fournier at 9.675 and Merritt at 9.625.

“Our beam team was awesome tonight,” said Wright.  “We stayed on the beam this week and had very solid performances.  We competed with confidence which showed in the scores we received.”

“The team chemistry was awesome tonight,” said Porte.  “Everything came together for us tonight, especially on the beam and floor.  We realized we couldn’t have the letdown in the last two rotations like we did last week.  Everyone hit their routines on floor and beam which made it much easier for us tonight.”

San Jose State now returns home for a Western Athletic Conference dual meet against Sacramento State next Friday night, February 6.  The meet begins at 7 p.m., at Spartan Gym, located in Yosh Uchida Hall on the corner of Fourth and San Carlos Streets.
