San Jose, Calif.-----Veronica Porte captured the floor exercise and Alise Blackwell finished first in the uneven bars for San Jose State as the Spartans defeated Sacramento State and Wisconsin Stout in a women’s gymnastics meet.
Porte posted a 9.750 for her winning routine and Blackwell, a 9.800. Porte, a junior from Martinez, Calif., finished first in the all-around with a 38.875. Blackwell was third in the all-around with a 38.675.
"We never let ourselves give up. Even with our falls, we kept our energy up and kept ourselves going. It worked out in the end," said Porte, about the Spartans who had two falls on the uneven bars. "Then, we went five for six on beam.
"We didn't give up. We didn't give up the fight. That's the best we've fought (this season)."
Other event winners were Sacramento State’s Alycia Chan in the vault with a 9.825 and Marina Borisova with a 9.875 in the balance beam. Borisova was second in the all-around with a 38.725.
"It was a great meet. Whenever we compete against Sacramento State, it's a good meet. It brings out the best in both teams and it's going to be a fight, especially after the first rotation. We had some falls on the bars. We never gave up. We stayed in the meet. That's what did it for us," said San Jose State head coach Wayne Wright, who pointed out that this year's team is the first to sweep Sacramento State in dual meet action.
