Women's Gymnastics Defeats WAC Rival Sacramento State By .050

SacramentoThe San Jose State women’s gymnastics defeated Sacramento State by just 0.050 Friday night in a Western Athletic Conference meet at the Hornets Nest.  The Spartans scored a season-best 192.800, while Sacramento State scored a 192.750.

Three Spartans won individual events to lead the team.  Raylyn Cardeno scored a season-best 9.825 on the vault to win the apparatus.  Leah Bigelow received a season-high 9.725 on the beam to win the event. Veronica Porte tied for first with a 9.775 on floor.

“It felt good and was fun to win the beam” said Bigelow.  “I took out a skill that I fell on last week and that really helped by confidence.  I just stayed focused, especially performing after one of my teammates fell.”

San Jose State started the meet on the bars and was led by Renae Moneymaker who scored a career-best 9.800 to place second on the apparatus.  Jessica Khoshnood scored a 9.700, followed by Alise Blackwell with a 9.675.  Freshman Katie Merritt has improved her bars score every meet and scored a high of 9.575.  The team had to count a fall on the event and ended with a 47.875, while Sacramento State scored a 48.025 on the vault to take the early lead.

The Spartans rotated to the vault and scored the 12th highest team vault score in school history with a 48.525.  After Cardeno’s 9.825, Moneymaker and Shanice Howard  each scored a 9.700.  Blackwell and Porte each received a 9.650, and Michelle Minotti scored a 9.625.  Sacramento State continued to hold its lead as the Hornets scored a 48.700 on bars and led 96.725-96.400.

“Our vault team was on tonight,” said San Jose State head coach Wayne Wright.  “Raylyn, Renae and Shanice really led our team on the event.  Vault was the team that really solidified our performances tonight.”

In the third rotation, San Jose State scored another 48.525, this time on the floor.  Porte led the team with her season-best 9.775.  Casey Jay and Howard scored 9.725 a piece, while Emily Stebbins scored a season-high 9.700.  Cardeno scored a season-best 9.600, while Blackwell scored a 9.075.  Sacramento State had to count a fall on beam in the third rotation and scored just a 47.575, opening the door for the Spartans to take a 144.925-144.300 lead heading into the final rotation.

“The floor team kept our momentum going from the vault,” said Wright.  “It was good to have Casey Jay back in the lineup.  The team as a whole did well for us tonight.”

On beam in the final rotation, Bigelow led the Spartans with a 9.725.  Porte scored a 9.650, followed by Stebbins with a season-best 9.550.  Minotti contributed a 9.500, while Kelli Fournier scored a 9.450.  The Spartans scored a season-best 47.875 on beam, and held on to its slim lead despite a 48.450 from Sacramento State on floor.

“The beam team did feel some pressure to maintain our lead,” said Wright.  “They stayed the course and I am really proud of everyone who performed for us tonight.  We never gave up and stayed focused.”

In the all-around, Porte was the only Spartan competitor.  She scored a 37.875 and had to count a fall on bars where she scored an 8.800.

San Jose State improves to a perfect 5-0 on the season and returns home next Friday evening, February 1, to host Sacramento State and Wisconsin-Stout.  The meet begins at 7 p.m., at Spartan Gym.
