San Jose, Calif.--San José State women's gymnasts Kaitlin Won and Maddie Herr have been named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Gymnast and Newcomer of the Week, respectively, for their performances during the week of January 12-18.
In just her third collegiate meet and the second meet competing in the all-around, Won, a freshman, recorded her first win in the all-around in a meet with #10 California and Wisconsin-La Crosse. Won scored a 38.950 to win the all-around by .025 over Herr. Won recorded season-bests of 9.750 on bars, 9.750 on beam and 9.800 on floor. She tied for third on beam and was the Spartans best performer on bars. Won was part of the floor team that scored a 49.125, the 10th-highest team score on floor in school history.
Herr, a transfer from The Ohio State University, placed second in the all-around in the three-team meet. Competing in the all-around for just the second time in her collegiate career, Herr scored a 38.925 and was second by just .025. She tied her season-best on floor with a 9.825 and on beam at 9.725. Herr added a 9.700 on vault and 9.675 on bars. She too was part of the floor team that scored a 49.125, the 10th-highest team score on floor in school history.
Won and Herr helped the Spartans finished second to #10 California by just .125 (194.875-194.750) and helped San José State to its best team score of the season at 194.750.
San Jose State travels to Berkeley this Sunday, January 25, for a meet against California, Arizona State and Denver. The meet begins at 2 p.m., inside Haas Pavilion.
