DENVER - San Jose State's Thomasina Wallace and Denver's Melodie Pulgarin Linero have been named the Verizon Western Athletic Conference Gymnast of the Week and Specialist of the Week, respectively, for the week of Jan. 9-15.
Wallace, a senior from Pomona, Calif. (Diamond Ranch HS) won the all-around at the NorCal Quad Meet on Sunday with a 39.150, beating Stanford's Ashley Morgan. Wallace also won on beam with a 9.825 and placed second on bars (9.850) and on floor (9.850). She rounded out the all-around with a 9.625 on vault. Wallace helped San Jose State to its best season-opening meet score in school history with a 194.300. She is tied for 20th in the country in the all-around and 15th on the bars.
Pulgarin Linero, a sophomore from Barcelona, Spain (IES CAR de Sant Cugat) posted the highest score on an individual event in the WAC this past week. Pulgarin Linero recorded a career-high 9.900 on vault in a meet against Nebraska to place her in a tie for second on the apparatus.
Other Gymnast of the Week Nominees : Sacramento State freshman Kalliah McCartney posted a 38.850 in the all-around at the NorCal Quad meet to place third ... Southern Utah junior Alyssa Click posted a 38.600 in the all-around in a meet against Missouri ... Utah State freshman Sarah Landes notched a 38.825 in a dual meet against No. 5 Utah.
Other Specialist of the Week Nominees : Sacramento State sophomore Ashley Woof posted a career-high 9.750 on bars at the NorCal Quad meet ...
