Gymnastics Records Best Opening-Meet Score

Stanford, Calif.-With strong performances on four events, the San Jose State women's gymnastics team opened the 2012 season with a 194.300, the best team opening-meet score in school history.

The team competed Sunday at the NorCal Quad Meet held at Stanford's Burnham Pavilion. The Spartans were second to Stanford and finished ahead of Sacramento State and UC Davis.

"We blew away our expectations today," said Spartan Katie Valleau.  "We knew we had the talent to do well, and today showed our drive, motivation and preparedness for the season."

The Spartans started the day on the beam where the team scored a 48.300.  Thomasina Wallace led the team with a 9.825, followed by Julia Greer and Cassandra Harrison who each had a 9.770.  Aubrey Lee scored a 9.550, while freshman Kiley Field made her debut with a 9.525.  Freshman Tauny Shearer rounded out the scoring with an 8.450.

The team's strongest event came next with best floor score between the four teams with a 49.050.  Wallace again led the team with a 9.850, followed by Greer and Valleau at 9.825.  Harrison and freshman Alyssa Montalban scored a 9.775 each.  Lee rounded out the scoring with a 9.725.

On vault, the team scored a 48.300.  Valleau led team with a 9.725, followed by Montalban at 9.675.  Greer had a 9.650, while Lee and Wallace each scored a 9.625.  Harrison rounded out the scoring with a 9.475.

Rotating to the bars for the final event, San Jose State posted a 48.650.  Wallace again led the team with a 9.850.  Casey McCord and Alyssa Telles-Nolan each scored a 9.725, while Harrison added a 9.700.  Field scored a 9.650, while freshman Dannon Gregory had a 9.625.

Wallace won the all-around with a 39.150, while Harrison scored a 38.650 in the all-around.

"I felt good with our start today," said Wallace.  "I hit 4-for-4 today which is always a good start.  I am also proud of my teammates for the energy they brought today.  We stepped up after starting on beam and taking a fall, but we did not let us phase us."

"The ladies did an amazing job today," said Spartan head coach Wayne Wright.  "We know we are talented, and today we went out and proved it.  To go 23-of-24 and to have 13 different gymnasts compete for shows how hard we worked in training.  I am proud and happy for the team."
