#23 Women's Gymnastics Hosts BYU, UC Davis Friday Night

The 23rd ranked San Jose State women’s gymnastics team makes its debut in Spartan Gym this Friday evening, January 16. The team hosts Brigham Young and UC Davis in a meet that begins at 7:00 p.m.

The Spartans have their highest ranking in school history after scoring a 193.300 at this past Sunday’s meet at Cal State Fullerton. The score is the highest season-opening score in school history.

Veronica Porte and Thomasina Wallace led the Spartans in the victory. Porte won the all-around with a 39.100 and tied for first on the vault with a 9.775 and the beam at 9.750. She is 22nd nationally in the all-around. Wallace tied Porte for first on the beam with a 9.750 and was second in the all-around with a 38.975.

Brigham Young has competed in two meets this season. The team scored a 189.125 in a quadrangular meet in Cancun Mexico on January 2, and a 188.975 in a home meet against Oregon State last Friday night.

In their first meet of the season, UC Davis finished second last Saturday in a tri-meet at California with Sacramento State. The Aggies scored a 190.250 in the meet. Junior Tanya Ho won the vault title at the meet with a 9.775 and tied her teammate Lida Gehlen for second on the bars with a 9.800.

Individual meet ticket prices are $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for youth 12-and-under. Youth in their Club Gymnastics shirts or sweats will be $1.00. Seating is General Admission at Spartan Gym. All doors to the facility open 60 minutes prior to every home meet. Current San Jose State students in possession of a valid Tower ID card are granted complimentary admission.
