Spartans Post Season-High Performance At Arizona

Tucson, Ariz. - The San Jose State women's gymnastics team held its own against three nationally-ranked opponents in a quad meet at the University of Arizona, finishing with its best bars score of the season.

"I was pleased that we stayed with our plan after each rotation," San Jose State head coach Wayne Wright said.

In the overall team scoring, #6-Stanford (6-0) won with a 196.025. #19-Arizona was second at 195.850 followed by #18-Illinois at 193.750 and San Jose State (2-4) with a 192.550.

The Spartans opened the meet on floor. Julia Greer backed up her win on floor in the NorCal Quad last Friday with a team-leading 9.700. It was the best performance of the season for freshman Jasmine Holmes with a 9.475. In her first-career showing on floor, Kiley Field recorded a 9.575. Cami Guyer's 9.575 was the best of her collegiate career.

The vault team turned in solid performances, with the six gymnasts earning a 9.500 or higher. Cassandra Harrison led the pack with a 9.725, her best in 2013. Bekah Gher also performed her best vault showing of the season, scoring 9.675.

Career-high performances on bars for Marissa Unpingco and Guyer, who both recorded 9.800, highlighted the team's third rotation. In addition, Alyssa Telles-Nolan's 9.775 was a season-high. Despite counting a fall, the Spartans cranked out a season-best team score of 48.600.

San Jose State rounded out the meet on beam with a quality performance by Gher, whose 9.800 showing led the Spartans. Greer earned a 9.725 for the Spartans' second-best beam score.

Guyer was the lone Spartan to compete in the all-around, finishing with a career-high 38.675.

"Despite the scores being low, we did not let that get to us," Wright said. "We really wanted to stay focused on what we do, and tried to improve on last week's meet."

San Jose State is on the road again next week, Friday, January 18, at Sacramento State for a conference meet against the Hornets, and a non-conference meet versus Arizona State, at 7:00 p.m.
