Women's Gymnastics Wins Opener At UC Davis

Davis, Calif. ---- The San Jose State women’s gymnastics team opened the 2007 season with a victory at UC Davis on Friday evening. The Spartans posted a team score of 189.450, while the Aggies finished with 187.875 points. SJSU trailed by 0.150 after the third rotation, but a solid performance on the beam boosted the team to the first win of the season.

Alise Blackwell led the way for the Spartans on the beam with a second-place finish in the event and a score of 9.625. Greta Leach took third place in the event with a 9.600. The team finished with an event score of 47.575 to pull away from the Aggies and claim the victory.

In the uneven bars, junior Michelle Minotti recorded the best score for the Spartans with a 9.675. Minotti was also the top finisher for SJSU in the vault. She posted a 9.750 in the event, good for second place.

Taking third and fourth place in the uneven bars were Liz Major and Blackwell, both recording a 9.500. Freshman Jessica Khoshnood tied for fifth place in her first event as a Spartan with a 9.450. SJSU finished the event with 46.775 points.

In the vault, San Jose State earned 48.200 team points. Behind Minotti, freshman Tiffany Louie scored a 9.675 for a second-best Spartan score. Blackwell followed closely behind with a 9.625.

The Spartans received a score of 46.900 in the floor exercise. Sophomore Veronica Porte recorded the highest score for SJSU with a 9.500. Freshman Gabrielle Targosz followed closely behind with a 9.450.

Blackwell and Porte competed in the all-around for SJSU with Blackwell taking first place. She posted a score of 38.050 to edge past UC Davis’ Michelle Kulovitz. Porte finished with 37.275.

"I'm glad that we got through this first meet of the season with a victory," said San Jose State head coach Wayne Wright. "We had some kinks, but we didn't give up and we pulled through. This meet gave us a chance to find out what we need to work on in order to keep improving. I'm proud of the girls for not giving up and fighting, especially not having your top athlete (Minotti in the all-around). The beam team pulled it through for us."

"We have a lot to work on, but we performed some real good routines and got the year off to a good start," said Leach. "We finished up really well on the beam. It felt good to hit our last event and finish on a good note."

The Spartans will be back in action again on Friday, January 19, at Cal State Fullerton.
