Women's Gymnastics Defeats Titans in 2008 Opener

San JoseSan Jose State used a strong fourth rotation on the floor to defeat Cal State Fullerton, 191.050-189.825, Friday evening in the team’s first meet of the season.

Individually for the Spartans, Alise Blackwell won the bars with a 9.800, floor with a 9.850 and the all-around with a 38.850. Veronica Porte finished second in the all-around with a 38.400. Kelli Fournier won the beam with a 9.675.

“I was very pleased with the performances of Alise and Veronica tonight,” said San Jose State head coach Wayne Wright. “They gave us a great boost.”

Raylyn Cardeno led the Spartans in the first rotation with a 9.800 on the vault. Porte scored a 9.675, followed by Blackwell at 9.650, Michelle Minotti at 9.625, Shanice Howard at 9.500 and Renae Moneymaker with a 9.475. The Spartans had a 48.250-47.175 advantage over the Titans after the rotation.

The Titans made up ground on San Jose State in the second rotation. Cal State Fullerton scored a 48.100 on vault, while the Spartans scored a 47.575 on bars. Blackwell won the event with a 9.800. Minotti scored a 9.650, followed by Jessica Khoshnood with a 9.600. Porte scored a 9.450, while Katie Merritt received a 9.075. Tiffany Louie scored a 9.050 for San Jose State. The Spartans had a 95.825-95.275 lead after two rotations.

San Jose State had to count a fall on beam in the third rotation, and Cal State Fullerton had a strong rotation on floor to take a 143.475-142.850 lead. Fournier led the Spartans with a 9.675. Blackwell received a 9.550, while Porte scored a 9.525. Leah Bigelow got a 9.275, followed Greta Leach at 9.000 and Emily Stebbins with an 8.450.

The Spartans finished the meet strong on the floor with a 48.200. Blackwell again led the team with a 9.850, and Porte finished strong with a 9.750. Howard scored a 9.700, while Cardeno received a 9.500. Stebbins scored a 9.400, and Louie got a 9.150.

“Overall, I am happy with our performances in our first meet of the season,” said Wright. “We can now back to the gym this week and work on our mistakes from this meet and get ready for next Friday night.”

San Jose State returns to competition next Friday, January 18, at UC Davis with the Aggies, Seattle Pacific and Springfield College.
