Women's Gymnastics Opens 2009 Season At CS Fullerton

The 2009 San Jose State women’s gymnastics team makes its debut this Sunday, January 11, with a dual meet at Western Athletic Conference foe Cal State Fullerton. The meet begins at 1 p.m. at Titan Gym.

The Spartans return 10 letterwinners from last year’s team that advanced to the NCAA West Regional for the third time in school history. The team finished season at the WAC Championships, missing first by two-tenths of a points.

San Jose State was selected third in the WAC Preseason Coaches’ Poll behind defending champion Boise State and Southern Utah.

Returners include All-WAC performers Veronica Porte, Renae Moneymaker and Shanice Howard. Porte was a first team honoree on vault and a second team honoree on beam. Moneymaker earned second team honors on bars, while Howard was second team on vault and floor.

This year’s team also features six newcomers Courtney Baron, Aubrey Lee, Casey McCord, Katie Valleau, Thomasina Wallace and Samantha Wong.

The first home meet is on Friday, January 16, when the team hosts Boise State and UC Davis at Spartan Gym beginning at 7 p.m.
