Women's Gymnastics Starts Season With Second Place Finish

Fullerton, Calif.The San Jose State women’s gymnastics team started the 2006 season with a second place finish at CS Fullerton with a 188.450 team score.  The Spartans finished second to NC State who scored a 188.575.  Junior Raylyn Cardeno was the Spartans’ top-finisher with a second place on the vault with a 9.825 and seventh on the floor with a 9.525.


San Jose State’s best scores of the day came on the vault as the team scored a 48.525.  Along with Cardeno’s career-best 9.825, Michelle Minotti tied her career-best with a 9.800. Freshman Veronica Porte scored a 9.675, while Alley Zezoney tied her career-best with a 9.625.  Renae Moneymaker scored a 9.600, while Shina Cardeno received a 9.575.


“It felt really good to hit my vault today,” said Raylyn Cardeno.  “We had a good meet as a team, and it felt good to get the season started.”


On bars, Porte was the Spartans’ top-finisher with a 9.650 to tied for second place as the team scored a 47.325.  Minotti tied for seventh with a 9.575, while Tracie Kavalec scored a 9.525.  Freshman Alise Blackwell scored a 9.500, while Jennifer Pizano received a 9.075.  Moneymaker rounded out the Spartans with an 8.525.


The beam was the Spartans downfall on Sunday as the team scored a 45.400 and had to count two falls.  Leah Bigelow placed fourth in the meet with a 9.525 to lead the team.  Adriane Mertens placed sixth with a 9.375, while Amberly Klein tied for ninth with a 9.200.  Raylyn Cardeno and Porte each scored an 8.700, while Minotti scored an 8.500.


The Spartans scored a 47.200 on floor and was led by Raylyn Cardeno who placed seventh with a 9.525.  Klein and Minotti tied for eighth place with a 9.500.  Moneymaker finished 12th with a 9.425, while Michelle de Groof was 16th with a 9.250.  Porte scored an 8.200.


Minotti finished second in the all-around with a 37.375, while Porte was sixth with a 36.225.


“First meets are nerve wracking, and it was nice to get it out of the way,” said Minotti.  “We did pretty good even though we have some mistakes.  We can fix those for next time.”


“I am very pleased with our outcome today,” said San Jose State head coach Wayne Wright.  “This was a great experience for everyone on the team.  The freshmen made an immediate impact on our team which helped us.  We have some kinks to work out, but this gives us the tools to get ready for next Sunday’s meet at Stanford.”


San Jose State will next compete on Sunday, January 15, at Stanford in quadrangular meet with the Cardinal, Sacramento State and UC Davis.
