Gymnastics Opens 2011 Season Sunday, Picked Third In WAC Poll

The 2011 San Jose State women's gymnastics team opens the 2011 season this Sunday, January 9, with a tri-meet at UC Davis with Alaska Anchorage.  The meet begins at 2 p.m., inside the Pavilion.

San Jose State returns eight letterwinners from last year's team that finished fourth at the 2010 Western Athletic Conference Championships.  Senior Lily Swann returns this season after competing as an all-around competitor at the 2010 NCAA West Regional at UCLA.   Junior Thomasina Wallace returns to the Spartan lineup this year after missing the final two meets of the year with an injury.  She is another strong all-around performer for the Spartans who was a 2009 WAC Champion on the floor and the 2009 West Regional bar title with a school record 9.950.

Other returners include Shanice Howard who competed on the vault and beam last year and is the team's top Scholar Athlete and one of the department's top-five female Scholar Athletes.  Katie Merritt begins her senior year as one of the team's top performers on the vault, bars and beam.  Aubrey Lee returns to compete on the vault, beam and floor and was a first team All-WAC honoree on the beam in 2009.  Casey McCord will be a contributor for the Spartans on the floor and vault.  Alyssa Telles-Nolan was a bars specialist for San Jose State in 2010.  Katie Valleau begins her third year contributing on the vault and floor.

The Spartans also added three freshmen for the 2011 season.  Cassandra Harrison comes to San Jose State from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, where she was a member of Team Alberta at the 2009 Canadian Championships National Open.  She won the gold on the floor, bronze on the vault and team gold.  Julia Greer won the YMCA All-Around National Championship twice and competed at the 2010 Junior Olympics.  Alexandra Myers competed for Desert Lights Gymnastics in Chandler, Ariz., and was a three-time Level 10 state champion on the vault.

The Spartans were selected third in the WAC Gymnastics Preseason Coaches' Poll.   The team is behind Boise State, picked first with fourth votes, and Southern Utah, who won the 2010 WAC Championship and received two first-place votes.
