San Jose, Calif.-- Kaitlin Won recorded a career-best 39.225 in the all-around, while she and Kaprece Nadonza each won at least a share of an event title as the San José State women's gymnastics team scored a season-best 193.925 Friday night in the team's home opener for the season. UC Davis won the met with a 194.825.
Won tied for first on the floor with a 9.850 and was second on vault at 9.800 and third on bars at 9.800 and beam at 9.775.
Nadonza scored a career-best 9.850 in capturing her first collegiate bars title Friday night. She also helped the bars team to a 48.800, with Won scoring a 9.800, Rachel Heinl at 9.750, Kendal Watts and Stephanie Relova at 9.700 and Haleigh Shepard at 9.150.
San Jose State started the meet with a 48.175 on vault, led by Won's 9.800. Erica Matos added a 9.750, followed by Shepard with a career-high 9.725, Rachel Heinl at 9.675, Taylor Chan at 9.225 and Josalyn Ray at 9.150.
After a strong bars rotation, the beam team recorded its best score of the season at 48.075, despite having to count fall. Won and Alisa Bogdan led the team as each scored a 9.775 (a career best for Bogdan). Chelsey Andrada had a 9.650, and Michelle Shalit competed for the first time for SJSU and got a 9.525. Relova had a 9.350, while Chan added a 9.250.
The Spartan floor team had another strong showing with a 48.875. Won again led the team with a 9.850, then Ellie Pascoe-Long and Chan each recorded a 9.800. Andrada had a 9.725, while Matos and Madison Loomis, making her floor debut, scored a 9.700 each.
The Spartans return to The Event Center next Friday, February 10, to host Sacramento State in a meet that begins at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at the door.
