Arroyo Grande, Calif.Despite windy and cold conditions on Tuesday, the San Jose State women’s golf team again shot the lowest round and won the Lamkin Grip Cal Poly Invitational by 12 shots over Sacramento State at the Cypress Ridge Golf Course.
The Spartans shot a 303 in the final round, the best score of the day by six shots, to finish the tournament with a two-round total of 598. The tournament win is the first for the team this season and the first since the 2007 Spartan Invitational.
Individually, Cristina Corpus was the team’s top finisher as she tied for second with a 146. In her best finish of the season, she shot a 75 in the second round. Katrina Delen-Briones shot the best individual round of the tournament on Wednesday with a one-over 73. She finished the two days with a 150, tying with teammate Erica Moston for eighth place. Moston shot a 79 in the second round.
Kanika Minocha led the tournament in par-three scoring at one-under. She finished the tournament in 25th place with a 155. Madeleine Ziegert shot a 76 on Tuesday and finished 15th with a 153. Jody Ho, playing as an individual in her first collegiate tournament, ended in 34th place with a 158.
“These were the toughest conditions we have playing in all year,” said San Jose State head coach John Dormann. “This tournament was a good experience for our team, especially entering the final round in first place. Now our team has a feel for what that is like and can benefit from this experience in the future.
“We had a wonderful semester and was great to end on a positive note. We know that we need more work to reach our ultimate goal of playing in the NCAA Championships.”
San Jose State improved its team finishes this semester, starting fourth in the first tournament and moved up one spot in each successive tournament before this win. Moston shot par or better in 10 of her 11 rounds played and is currently in the top-10 nationally in scoring. Corpus recorded three rounds under par and two par rounds and had her best finish at this tournament.
