Spartans Finish Fifth at Kent Youel Invitational

Kapolei, Hawaii-----Cristina Corpus and Kimberly Punyasavatsut recorded final round two-over par 74's for San Joe State University as the Spartans finished fifth at the Kent Youel Invitational women's golf tournament.

San Jose State completed the 54-hole tournament with a 918 team total on the par 72, 6,150-yard Kapolei Golf Course. The Spartans lowered their team score by one stroke each round and had a 305, the fifth best team score of the final round.

UCLA finished first in the 19-team field with an 881 total. Southern California was second at 885. California was third at 896 and Oregon State edged the Spartans for fourth place by a stroke with a 917 total.

“We played fairly well and we were consistent. I felt good that everybody contributed,” said San Jose State University women’s golf head coach John Dormann, whose team finished ahead of the other four Western Athletic Conference teams in the field. “We hit the ball pretty well, but our short game was not as good as we need it to be.”

Corpus notched her second top-20 finish in four fall tournaments tying for 19th place at 228. Katrina Delen Briones was next for the Spartans at 230 finishing in a tie for 26th place. Punyasavatsut's 74 placed her in a tie for 40th in the 102-player field at 234.

UCLA’s Tiffany Joh and Maria Jose Uribe shared medalist honors with one-over par totals of 217.

“We had five players gain a lot of experience this semester,” summarized Dormann. Playing with two sophomores and two freshmen, the Spartans finished in the top five in three of their four fall tournaments.

San Jose State returns to action in February when it begins its spring season at the Papa John’s Collegiate in Miami, Fla., February 17, 2008.
